So which were the most significant design biases? The omnipresence of wood, used for framing, structural elements, floors, the pergola and even the corridors. The choice of exterior insulation made of cork or wood fibres. And, perhaps even more daring, the use of a plain reused tile to clad certain façades! These decommissioned tiles, which have no mechanical defects but only minor imperfections in colour or irregularities incompatible with Terreal’s quality specifications, are generally stored and then ground down to be later reused. In order to minimise the environmental impact of the project, the ingenious architects decided to give them a chance. This was a good decision, because beyond boasting carbon neutrality, they give a special charm to the campus’ twelve maisonettes. The red-brown of the roofing tile lightens or darkens slightly according to the façades, offering each one a unique identity. Another major plus for these repurposed tiles is that they were manufactured only 15 miles from the construction site, so their transport did not negatively impact the environmental rating. A delightful initiative that deserves to be recycled!
Lasbordes , France
Eco Campus de la Raque
Conceived with common sense and innovation, the Ecole Supérieure de la Raque’s eco-campus, located in Lasbordes, brings to the fore local materials, which are bio-sourced and given new value. Set in a rural environment, this bold programme of 80 homes, initiated by social landlord Alogea, is divided into four plots of three buildings that give the impression of a small village, both green and welcoming. A vegetable garden in permaculture, a pétanque court, bike storage and more. By placing a major emphasis on living in harmony together in its eco-reflection, the firm Seuil Architecture has created an avant-garde site that cuts no corners when it comes to comfort and aesthetics.

Majestic repurposed roof tiles
The word of
Seuil architecture, Architect
Interview"This project is part of our sustainable and eco-built architectural work. We favoured local raw materials, installed nesting boxes, designed permeable soft pathways, set up a landscaped retention basin to best manage rainwater, as well as other features. We’re very keen to preserve biodiversity. We wanted to achieve balance and maximise the value of the site on which the eco-campus was to be set. So we commissioned an ecologist to carry out an impact study regarding our intervention on this arable land. In this context, employing re-used tiles for the insulating panels seemed entirely fitting. The Ségala plain tile has minor irregularities and slight variations of shades, which give it an overall look with genuine charm. The repurposed tiles that we have used truly reinforce this aesthetic. When light bounces off the façades, it creates really beautiful nuances. Reuse does not mean a "second hand" effect. On the contrary, it’s possible to achieve designs with particularlyinteresting flexibility. The proof here is very graphic."
